A pipe swaging assembly 10 has first and second gripping means 66, 78, a drive means, and a swaged die 86. In a corresponding method of usage the overlapping end of two pipes (fig.2a) are held within the assembly and the swaged die moves parallel to the axis of the pipes to form a metal to metal seal, by elastic and plastic deformation. The assembly may be used to form long pipes passed into oil or gas drilling bore holes. The joint formed may have advantages over threaded joints, in that more weight can be applied to the joint during formation, reduced or negated leakage, and the ability to turn a stuck pipe with such joints in a borehole, without the joints unscrewing. |
