A scanning tunnelling microscope in combination with an optical microscope (1), has a probe needle (6) of the scanning tunnelling microscope disposed in alignment with an optical axis (4) of the optical microscope (1). In one embodiment the optical microscope (1) has a lens sleeve (1a) and an objective lens (3) provided at one end of the lens sleeve and formed with a central opening (3a). An electrostriction element of the scanning tunnelling microscope is mounted in the opening (3a) and carries the needle (6).
