PURPOSE:To reduce shock caused by engagement of gears without deteriorating the starting property of a vehicle by detecting the amount of slipping of a frictional engaging element which achieves a predetermined high speed, and downshifting a transmission to a lower gear after the amount of slipping is lowered below a predetermined value when the gears are engaged. CONSTITUTION:A transmission 1 has a plurality of speed change gears G1-GR and a plurality of hydraulic clutches C1-C4, both of which are installed between an input shaft 1a connected to an engine 2 via a torque covnertor 3 and an output shaft 1b connected to each of the driving wheels 4 of a vehicle via a differential gear 5. When gears are engaged by switching to the forward range, the transmission is temporalily set to a predetermined high gear and then downshifted to a lower gear. In this case, the amount of slipping of a predetermined hydraulic clutch for high gears is detected according to detection signals from sensors 14, 15 for detecting the speeds of rotation of the shafts 1a, 1b. After the amount of slipping of the hydraulic clutch for high gears is lowered below a predetermined value when the gears are engaged, the transmission is downshifted to a lower gear by ECU 10. |
