The motor has an electrically conductive track (10) provided by one of the commutator segments (66) and extending parallel to the commutator (6). The track has a length which is greater than the commutator period (t) and is scanned via a sliding sensor (101) to provide a momentary voltage value. The track may be open-ended or closed by abutting a further commutator segment, its ohmic resistance being greater than the ohmic resistance of a partial coil (57) of the motor armature winding (5).
