PURPOSE: A image scanner and an image scanning method for offering excellent operation and constant scanning quality, a printer, and a data storage medium are provided to scan/image a scanning target in a state that a feeding direction is always correctly arranged and enhance operation by facilitating insertion/removal of the scanning target. CONSTITUTION: Feeding mechanisms(43a,43b,46a,46b) feed a medium(C) inserted from an inserting opening(41a) forward/backward. A guide wall guides the medium fed by the feeding mechanism to a feeding path(41) in an arranged state. An image sensor(44) scans an image of the medium fed along the feeding path. The feeding mechanism feeds the medium to the inserting opening backward after feeding the medium to the image sensor until a specified indexing position. When the medium is fed backward from the specified indexing position, the image sensor scans the medium and the feeding mechanism discharges the medium to the inserting opening.
