PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find out a line or curved line in a complicated image or document by detecting the line and the curved line while using local edge information, and controlling the direction of a local edge through the cumulative processing of though transformation. SOLUTION: A 2D array shown by (θ, b) is constructed, a line is constituted as b=kxi-yi in a kb plane for each detecting point Pi=(xi, yi), the condition of tanθis established in the case ofϕ+Δ<θ<ϕ-Δ,ϕis the edge direction of the local edge andΔis a preset parameter to be determined with local edge direction estimation accuracy. When the line corresponding to all the respective detecting points Pi is constituted, a peak is obtained among points within the space of (θ, b) corresponding to the set of Pi on the same line, and the line b=kxi-yi corresponding to the position of each detecting point Pi is calculated (k) times for each detecting point Pi. In this case, the condition of k=180 deg./R is established and R is defined as a resolution.
