THIN FILM MAGNETIC HEAD AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head suppressing the leakage of magnetic flux and having excellent overwriting characteristics and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A non-magnetic layer patterns 10 and 12 are disposed between an upper pole chip 13a and a lower magnetic pole 9 in the order closer to the lower magnetic pole 9. They are so formed that the position of the front end of the non-magnetic layer pattern 12 retreats from the position of the front end of the non-magnetic layer pattern 10 and a step is formed between the non-magnetic layer patterns 10 and 12. By the presence of the non-magnetic layer patterns 10 and 12, propagation of magnetic flux between the upper pole chip 13a and the lower magnetic pole 9 is suppressed and flow of magnetic flux within the upper pole chip 13a becomes smooth and excellent overwriting characteristics can be secured.
