PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for an image forming apparatus, with which the cleaning failure in the image forming apparatus can be properly detected.

SOLUTION: The control method includes: a step S12 of obtaining print result image data read from the print result of image formed on paper by the image forming apparatus; a step 18 of determining a defect detection target area which is a target for detecting a defect from the print result image data obtained in the step S12; and a step S20 of detecting the defect from the defect detection target area determined in the step S18. By the control method, a reference in determining the defect detection target area in the step S18 can be changed.
