An implantable apparatus for treating neural-function in a brain of a patient, which comprises:
a diagnostic system that determines an electrical stimulation threshold for inducing a response in cells at a stimulation site in a cortical region of the brain of the patient; and
a stimulation system having a first electrode, a second electrode, and an implantable controller electrically coupled to the first and second electrodes, wherein the first and second electrodes are configured to be implanted at the stimulation site and the controller is configured to apply an electrical stimulation via the first and second electrodes at an intensity below the electrical stimulation threshold.
