PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new means capable of controlling the ignition timing of an internal combustion engine while allowing for the influence of heat losses. SOLUTION: The amount of heat loss of an internal combustion engine is calculated and the ignition timing is controlled based on the amount of heat loss. When a heat loss rate RQ<SB>W</SB>is 0%, a 50% combustion point during MBT is generally TDC (top dead center), and the heat loss rate RQ<SB>W</SB>and the crank angle of the 50% combustion point during MBT are generally proportional to each other. Thus, to perform correction or setting of the ignition timing while allowing for the heat loss rate, at least one preliminary experiment is conducted for calculating the heat loss rate RQ<SB>W</SB>and the 50% combustion point during MBT.
