The system (10) has a light barrier arrangement (12) performing position determination of a longest cut of a rotary tool in a machine tool. A multi-directional measuring caliper arrangement (14) is provided for measurement at a stationary tool toward X, Y and Z-axes. A signal electronics circuit (32) performs signal shaping and signal routing to a machine controller. The circuit receives measuring signals from the barrier arrangement and caliper arrangement, and routes the signals in a common signal transmission line to the controller.
