<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern recognition apparatus which recognizes an object with a high degree of accuracy regardless of photograph taking direction or severalty. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Digital image data containing an object for registration is input, and the whole image for the registration is encoded by combination of prescribed increment signs in each divided block. A similarity calculation apparatus is constituted based on the increment sign selected one by one by an entropy criterion within each block, and a plurality of similarities calculation apparatus based on a boosting procedure are created and integrated and saved in a plurality of similarities calculation apparatus storage section 106. Digital image data for recognition is input, A degree of similarity is calculated by a similarity calculation and integration section 111 using the data which is prepared by inputting and encoding the digital image data for recognition and a plurality of similarities calculation apparatus called from the plurality of similarities calculation apparatus storage section 106. For each object registered by an identification section 112, the object with the biggest degree of similarity among the above degrees of similarity is made an identification result.
