<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system that can correct chromatic aberration and can project large-screen without any distortion while employing an imaging optical system including a reflecting surface. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the image projection apparatus magnifying and projecting an image formed on a lightbulb 15 forming the image by the projection optical system, in the projection optical system magnifying and projecting the image formed on the lightbulb 15 onto a screen 21, first and second optical systems are arranged on the projection side of the lightbulb 15 sequentially from the side of the lightbulb 15, wherein: the first optical system 17 includes at least one dioptric system and has positive power; the second optical system 19 includes at least one reflecting surface having positive power and has positive power. The image formed by the lightbulb 15 is formed as an intermediate image in space in the optical paths of the first and second optical systems 17 and 19, a luminous flux emitted after the image is formed as the intermediate image is reflected by a reflecting surface 19, so that the intermediate image is further magnified to be projected on the screen 21 as a final image, and the shape in a plane direction of the final image is corrected by the shape of the intermediate image.
