A crystal oscillator element (100) equipped with an AT-cut crystal substrate (10), wherein: the crystal substrate (10) includes an oscillating section (40) and a peripheral section (50) that is thinner than the oscillating section (40) and provided to the outside of the oscillating section (40); the crystal substrate (10) has a long direction and a short direction; the long direction is parallel to the Z' axis; the short direction is parallel to the X axis; the oscillating section (40) has a short-side tapered lateral surface (42) provided on a first short side in the long direction; the short-side tapered lateral surface (42) is angled so as to contact the peripheral section (50) at an acute angle; the oscillating section (40) has an excitation electrode (20) formed on the principal surface thereof, which is adjacent to the short-side tapered lateral surface (42); and the end surface of the excitation electrode (20) toward the first short side is provided in a location that aligns with the boundary (B) between the short-side tapered lateral surface (42) and the peripheral section (50) in the Z' axis direction, or in a location to the inside of the oscillating section (40) in the Z' axis direction relative to the boundary (B).
