<p>The winding and unwinding mechanism is particularly for a safety belt, the latter having a looped end accommodated in an oblong mounting in a shaft together with a rod inside the loop. Rod and housing are of complementary section, so that on application of tension to the belt appreciable portions of it are clamped between them. The rod (16) is of curvilinear polygonal section with concave sides (17, 18, 19), and convex radiused corners (20, 21, 22). Complementary convex faces (26, 27) are formed in the housing.
