Process for obtaining 6,8-difluoro-1-ethyl-7-(3-methyl-1- piperazinyl)-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid and its salts. Comprises subjecting 3-acetyl-6,8-difluoro-1-ethyl-7-(4- ethoxycarbonyl-3-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-1,4- dihydroquinoline to an oxidation process and subsequent basic hydrolysis to yield the desired compound which is isolated from the reaction medium by conventional means. The product obtained has therapeutic properties as an antibacterial agent against Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacteria.
