A computer (12) and/or regulator device is provided that is coupled to a transducer measuring an operating value of the motor. It is so organised that it adjusts the excitation current to a desired value on the basis of the result of the drive measurement. A set operating behaviour is achieved, for e.g a set ratio between the armature voltage and rotational speed (for a set load), or between the armature current and the torque, and the excitation current is held constant at the desired value. The excitation current is set at such a value that the magnetic flux is at a value beneath the saturation region of the magnetisation curve.
