PURPOSE:To suppress the change of the internal stress distribution of a polarization maintaining optical fiber due to an external force by coating the splicing part of the polarization maintaining optical fiber with a re-coating layer where the Young's modulus is reduced from the outside to the inside. CONSTITUTION:The fusion splicing part of the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 is formed in such a way that two polarization maintaining fibers 1 whose coating layers 2 at terminal parts are eliminated are spliced by fusing setting their end faces as splicing planes 3, and after that, the re-coating layer 4 is formed the circumference of the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 at a part where the coating layer 2 is eliminated, and it is formed in such structure that the Young's modulus of the re-coating layer 4 is reduced from the outside to the inside. Therefore, stress received by the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 is reduced by bring scattered by a part 4a of low Young's modulus in the re-coating layer 4, and the change of the internal stress distribution of the polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 due to the external force can be suppressed, and an adverse effect on polarization maintaining characteristic by residual stress can be prevented from being applied.
