PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy and speed of recognition by previously recognizing a stationary obstruction, and correspondingly to the arrangement of the stationary obstruction, recognizing whether a body except the stationary obstruction is a person using a device or not. CONSTITUTION:After predeterminate time from a time of turning on an electric source, a sensor is actuated, and a spot where some body is detected is recognized and remembered as the existing place of a solid body, namely an obstruction. A distance sensor 6 is actuated on a sampling signal given by a control section 11 to measure a distance to the body. A parameter extracting section 8 extractinigly computes feature parameters required for the recognition and various judgments of the body decided as responded object on distance data to each body, and sends them to a recognizing-judging section 9 and writes them in a memory 13. The judging section 9 receives the parameter and judges about the body being a responded object. Correspondingly to the recognized stationary obstruction, whether the body except the stationary obstruction, for example a body being a responded object, is a user for the image forming device or not is judged.
