PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element comprising base plates, electrodes, controlled alignment layers each having a specified thickness and a specified liquid crystal and using a high-reliability chiral smectic liquid crystal. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal element comprises upper and lower base plates, electrodes, controlled alignment layers each having a thickness of 200Åand a chiral smectic liquid crystal composition, the liquid crystal composition being a chiral smectic liquid crystal composition containing a perfluorocarbon compound containing 70wt.% or above group of smectic or latently smectic fluorine-containing liquid crystal compounds each of which has a fluorocarbon terminal part and a hydrocarbon terminal part which are bonded through a central nucleus and in which 30wt.% or above, based on the liquid crystal, compounds having a fluorocarbon terminal chain interrupted by an etheric oxygen and comprising at least one 2-30C hydrocarbon chain in which methylene groups may be substituted by Y, YCO or the like (wherein Y is O or S).
