The invention is directed to controlled- or sustained-release compositions for the release of pharmaceuticals or other agents. Essential components in the compositions of the present invention include one or more polymers and tannic acid or tannin. Release of the pharmaceutical or other agent is for a predetermined period of time and at a predetermined concentration. The site of action of the agent is topical, local or systemic. Polymers are cellulosic or proteinaceous.
