The machine comprises a drum (10) conveyor (12), a machine frame used in positioning and fixing the cover and e.g. a suction grip to place it. This takes the cover from a magazine stack, locating it precisely onto the vessel opening. A first automatic manipulator (24) on the frame takes a drum clamping ring (20) from a magazine stack. A second takes it over the cover and drum surface, the ring being wide open. The closure lever of the ring is then folded back, closing the drum. Preferred features: The machine has two stations, one to place the cover, the other in which the clamping ring is placed and closed. The equipment is further detailed, based on the foregoing principles.
