The invention provides an autonomous vacuum cleaner (10) having a main body (12) containing or supporting dirt and dust separating apparatus (52), a motor and fan unit (50) for drawing an airstream into the dirt and dust separating apparatus (52) and a cleaner head (22) for contacting a surface to be cleaned, the vacuum cleaner (10) being supported on or by a plurality of driven wheels or rollers (14) to allow the vacuum cleaner (10) to traverse the surface to be cleaned, characterised in that the driven wheels or rollers (14) are adapted to be driven at more than one speed in a forward direction and in that said speed can be selected by the user. This gives the user the ability to select a speed at which the cleaner (10) will operate. This gives the user the option to increase the speed of the cleaner (10) so that either a fixed floor area can be cleaned in a shorter space of time than would otherwise be the case or a greater floor area can be covered in a fixed time.
