<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the lifetime of an electrifying member by preventing the electrifying member from being spoiled in the event of abnormality, such as a jam, and to prolong the lifetime of an image carrier by suppressing the occurrence of an abnormal image. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with an electrifying means 3 for uniformly electrifying the surface of the image carrier, an exposing means 4 for forming an electrostatic latent image by exposure according to image information, a developing means 5 for developing the electrostatic latent image by sticking toner thereto and an electrostatic cleaning means 7 for removing the residue toner on the image carrier. In the above apparatus which removes the residue toner on the image carrier by the electrostatic cleaning means, passes the toner through the electrifying member and recovers the toner by the developing means, at the time of restarting up of an electrifying bias power source 27 for electrifying the surface of the image carrier and a control means 28 for controlling the electrifying bias power source after image formation operation is stopped en-route, the bias of the polarity reverse from the electrifying polarity of the toner and below the discharge threshold is applied to the electrifying member by the electrifying bias power source for the prescribed time and thereafter the bias of the same polarity as the electrifying polarity of the toner and above the discharge threshold is applied thereto. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
