A positive electrode active material for lithium ion batteries, which is represented by composition formula LiaNixCoyMnzMbO2 (wherein, M represents at least one or more elements selected from among elements including Mg and Al, 0.9 < a < 1.2, 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1.0, 0 < b < 0.1 and x + y + z + b = 1.0), and wherein the inter-grain variation coefficient of the metal element M is 0.20 or less. |
