Forward osmosis membranes include an active layer and a thin support layer. A bilayer substrate including a removable backing layer may allow forward osmosis membranes with reduced supporting layer thickness to be processed on existing manufacturing lines.

1. A forward osmosis membrane, comprising:
a support structure having a first side and a second side and comprising a polymeric material, a thickness of less than 2 mils, and a Frazier air permeability of greater than about 100 ft3/ft2/min; a membrane support layer disposed on the first side of the support structure and comprising a polymer loading of about 5 g/m2 to about 20 g/m2 and a thickness of less than 2 mils; and a selective barrier layer disposed on the membrane support layer and comprising a semipermeable, three-dimensional polymer network comprising polybenzimidazole and polyamide, the selective barrier layer having a thickness of less than 200 nm.
