<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide sulfonic acid group-containing polyphenylene sulfide powder useful as a constituent material for solid polymer type fuel cells and direct alcohol type fuel cells. <P>SOLUTION: The sulfonic acid group-containing polyphenylene sulfide powder is obtained by passing through a step for bringing a resin composition composed of polyphenylene sulfide into contact with a mixed solution of a halogenated hydrocarbon-based solvent with a sulfonating agent.
