An economy mode arrangement for a thermal printer has a contact element (2) moved away from the print head (1) by an eccentric actuator (4). A second transport roller pair (7) remain engaged. With the contact element (2) moved away the transfer strip (3) remains in a fixed position and is used several times as the paper (5) is fed across the head. For high quality reproduction the transfer strip is continuously incremented by engaging the contact elements. The head assembly (11) is pivot mounted to give access for cleaning purposes. ADVANTAGE - Economy mode reduces consumption of thermal transfer ribbon.
