Filter cigarette perforation device - uses measured ventilation characteristics to adjust setting of focussing lens for perforation beam

The filter cigarette perforation device uses a pulsed energy beam (48a, 48b) and a focussing lens (56a, 56b) directing the beam (48a, 48b) onto the cigarettes as these are fed through a perforation zone transverse to their axes. The distance of the focussing lens from the cigarettes can be adjusted, for varying the characteristic spacing between the obtained perforations. The ventilation characteristics of the cigarettes with different perforation spacings are measured and the extreme value of the measured ventilation characteristics is used for setting the distance of the focussing lens (56a, 56b).
