<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state brachytherapy applicator capable of establishing enlarged doses distribution towards locations within a patient's body by direct contact with the patient's tissue or organ of significant area or size, and to provide a system and method for performing radiation therapy treatment in an animal body using the solid state brachytherapy applicator. <P>SOLUTION: This solid state brachytherapy applicator has a vacuum cavity containing a cathode 22 and an anode 15 spaced at some distance from each other; an emitting means for emitting free electrons from the cathode; and an electric field means for applying during use a high-voltage electric field between the cathode and anode for accelerating the emitted free electrons toward the anode. The vacuum cavity is partitioned by first and second plate-shaped elements spaced at some distance from each other, and the first plate-shaped element is used as the cathode, while the second plate-shaped elements 15, 25 are used as the anode. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
