An interface unit (12) in communication with the person's body (10) receives an input signal. A polynomial processor (16) generates a control signal (18) as a polynomial function of the at least one input signal. A first generator (20) generates a functional electrical stimulation signal (22). A second generator (30) generates the drive signal (32) for the drive unit. A plurality of electrodes (24), coupled to at least one of a plurality of inactive muscles, stimulates the movement of the at least one limb by introducing the functional electrical stimulation signal to the at least one of the plurality of inactive muscles.</p>
