A winding machine rolls a web of material, and has a series of winding spindles (64,66,68,70) and a movable feeder (72). In the advanced position the feeder holds the web (20) as it moves between its discharge position (58,56) and wound position (64), placing the web around a newly-inserted spindle (68). The movable feeder has a rotating roller (92) which rests against the surface of the new spindle.
