<p>The invention provides a method of separating uranium from another metal, the method comprising the steps of providing the uranium in a higher oxidation state than in UO2; dissolving the uranium and other metal in an organic solvent; and selectively extracting the uranium from the organic solvent using a supercritical fluid. The method is suitable for use in reprocessing spent nuclear fuel. The present invention provides a "dry" method of separating uranium from another metal, i.e. the method does not require use of nitric acid for dissolution of spent nuclear fuel or large quantities of solvent for solvent extraction as in conventional Purex reprocessing.</p> |
