An edge angle estimating method estimates an edge angle from an edge vector extracted from an input video image by an edge extracting filter, wherein the edge vector is expressed by first and second edge intensity in two vertical directions to each other. The edge estimating method is provided with a first approximating process for making the first and second intensity approximate to integers by means of correction values calculated with two raised to powers, so that the first and second edge intensity approximated to the integers is used for the estimation of the edge angle.
