PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens that is compact and used suitably in a digital still camera, or the like, and ensures high image quality, and to provide an imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes a negative first group 10, a diaphragm St, a positive second group 20, and a positive third group 30, in that order starting from the object side. To vary power from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, intervals between the groups are changed, and the first group 10 has, in order starting from the object side, a negative lens L11 having at least one aspherical face and a concave face on the image side, and a positive meniscus lens L12 having a convex face on the object side; the first group 10 satisfies the conditional Formulas: (1) N2>1.95, (2) 0.2<Da/¾f1¾<0.3, and (3) 2.0<¾f1¾/fw<3.0, where N2 represents the refractive index of the positive meniscus lens L12 relative to line d, Da represents the distance on the optical axis between the object side top of the negative lens L11 and the image side top of the positive meniscus lens L12, f1 represents the focal distance of the first group 10, and fw represents the focal distance of the system as a whole, at the wide angle end.
