PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector in which the light quantity loss accompanying the reduction of speckle noise can be suppressed. SOLUTION: A diffuser 7 is disposed near the incident side of respective liquid crystal light valves 4R, 4G, 4B. A revolving shaft 7a parallel to the optical axis of the incident light is vertically fixed to the center of the diffuser 7. If a motor 8 performs rotation driving to the revolving shaft 7a, the diffuser 7 performs rotation motion around the revolving shaft 7a as a center. In the diffuser 7, four diffusion plates of a sectorial shape extending radially from a fixing section for fixing the revolving shaft 7a are disposed apart a spacing. Therefore, if the diffuser 7 is rotated by driving of the motor 8, the two states; the state (first state) that the light heading toward the liquid crystal light valves 4R, 4G, 4B transmits the diffusion plate and the state (second state) that the light passes the spacing are periodically repeated.
