PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent toner stuck to a shutter member of a density detection sensor from being scattered and stuck to an image part due to that the shutter member operates in the midst of forming an image. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus including an image carrier, an image density detection member 100 detecting the density of a toner image formed on the image carrier 1, and the shutter member 104 for shielding and opening the detection surface of the image density detection member includes an operation control means which controls so that opening/shutting operation of the shutter member may be consecutively performed by two or more times in accordance with image forming history when the image is not formed.
