摘要 A one-pixel structure of a display panel included in an auto-stereoscopic image display device adopts an in-plane switching mode. Transparent counter electrodes that are not provided in a liquid crystal panel of a normal in-plane switching mode are formed correspondingly to pixel peripheral regions on a second transparent substrate side and, in 3-dimensional image display, a vertical electric field is forcibly generated between the transparent counter electrodes and the comb-shaped electrodes, which causes the liquid crystal molecules to rise to show black display in the pixel peripheral regions. In 2-dimensional image display, meanwhile, the transparent counter electrodes are set to be floating, and the display panel is caused to have a structure substantially equivalent to a structure in which the transparent counter electrodes are not provided, to thereby make the display in pixel peripheral regions identical to the display (brightness) in a pixel main region.

A display device comprising: a display panel that performs image display with multiple pixels arranged in matrix; a pixel-peripheral-region brightness control unit that controls the brightness of pixel peripheral regions being peripheral of each said multiple pixels, independently of a pixel main region other than said pixel peripheral regions; and a parallax barrier panel located in front of or behind said display panel and configured to be switched between a completely light transmitting state set for a first format image and a partially light shielded state set for a second format image in which transmission regions and light-shielding regions are formed alternately along a horizontal direction, wherein said multiple pixels in said display panel include type 1 pixels and type 2 pixels alternately arranged in said horizontal direction, said type 1 pixels and said type 2 pixels functioning differently from one another for display of said second format image, said pixel peripheral regions include at least both end regions in said horizontal direction of each of said multiple pixels, and said pixel-peripheral-region brightness control unit performs, on said multiple pixels, a brightness setting process of forcibly setting said pixel peripheral regions to a black display state during said partially light shielded state of said parallax barrier panel and setting the brightness of said pixel peripheral regions to the same brightness as said pixel main region during said completely light transmitting state of said parallax barrier panel.
