This posture detection device and posture detection method acquire an image of a prescribed detection area using an image acquisition unit, extract a head portion from this acquired image of the detection area, determine prescribed parameters for this extracted head portion, and determine whether a monitored subject is in a prescribed posture on the basis of the determined parameters. Accordingly, this posture detection device and posture detection method are capable of more accurately determining the posture of a monitored subject by means of a simple configuration.
