The bladder melts at a temperature above the battery pack's desired operating condition, has a cavity for receiving the liquid and contacts at least a section of the battery pack. The protective layer is positioned onto a portion of the fire suppression bladder's exterior surface that is on the opposite side to that which contacts the battery pack.

A fire suppressant battery system, comprising: a) a battery pack, comprising: i) at least one casing;ii) an anode separated from a cathode by a separator to thereby form an electrode assembly housed in the casing; andiii) an electrolyte activating the electrode assembly in the casing; b) a fire suppressant bladder comprising a non-conductive fire suppressant liquid contained in an interior bladder space, wherein the fire suppressant bladder comprises an inner bladder surface and an outer bladder surface, and wherein the inner bladder surface surrounds the at least one casing; and c) a fire suppressant protective layer surrounding the outer surface of the fire suppressant bladder, d) wherein upon the battery pack experiencing a heat event, the fire suppressant bladder is configured to melt and release the non-conductive fire suppressant liquid onto the at least one casing with the fire suppressant protective layer helping to prevent shrapnel should the at least one casing rupture.
