PURPOSE:To high selectively produce an aromatic aldehyde useful as a raw material for organic synthesis of medicines, agrochemicals, dyes, perfumes, etc., under a mild condition in a high yield by reacting nitrogen dioxide with a benzyl alkyl ether. CONSTITUTION:(A) A benzyl alkyl ether [e.g. benzyl methyl ether, (0-methyl- benzyl) methyl ether or benzyl ethyl ether] is reacted with (B) nitrogen dioxide preferably in the presence of (C) an acid catalyst to produce its corresponding aromatic aldehyde. In addition, the component (B) is used preferably in an amount of 1 to 10mol, especially preferably 3 to 6mol based on 1mol component (A). This reaction is conducted in the presence of a solvent or without using a solvent and benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform are exemplified as the solvent. The amount of used solvent is preferably 0 to 100 times (weight ratio), especially 3 to 50 times the amount of the component (A). |
