Describes a compound of the formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, solvate or derivative thereof, wherein: either R1 is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, benzyl, halo, -CN, -OR7, -CO2R10, -CONR5R10, or R8 or R9 said alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl and benzyl being optionally substituted; R2 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, phenyl, benzyl, R8 or R9 said alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl and benzyl being optionally substituted; or, R1 and R2 when taken together, represent unbranched alkylene, optionally substituted by oxo, optionally wherein one methylene group of said alkylene is replaced by an oxygen or a nitrogen, said nitrogen atom being optionally substituted by R10; R3 is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, benzyl, halo, -CN, -OR7, -CO2R5, -CONR5R5, R8 or R9, said alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl and benzyl being optionally substituted; R4 is phenyl, naphthyl or pyridyl, each being optionally substituted by R8, halo, -CN, alkyl, halo alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, -CONR5R5, OR13, SoxR6, O-(alkylene)-CONR5R5, O-(alkylene)-NR5R5, or O-(alkylene)-OR6. Further described are processes for the preparation of compounds of the formula (I), compositions containing them and the uses of such derivatives. The compounds described bind to reverse transcriptase and are modulators thereof. As such the compounds described are useful in the treatment of a variety of disorders including those in which the inhibition of reverse transcriptase is implicated, for example disorders caused by HIV such as AIDS.
