A filter cartridge (1) comprises at least two paper or cardboard walls, i.e. a front wall (2) and a rear wall (3), with parallel accordion pleats (5) forming chambers between them that subject the gas flow to a deviation, and made with a series of offset perforations (7). It has an augmented surface and a means of reducing its thickness so that it can be inserted in a frame of reduced dimensions. The thickness reducing means comprises folds and cuts in at least part of the walls adjacent to the main folds and preferably perpendicular to them to produce a folding of the accordion pleats' crests.
