PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate squelch processing in the ring system in which plural nodes are interconnected by a transmission line respectively and contains an ATM cell. SOLUTION: Destination node information representing a node of cell destination is given to a header part of a node to which is inputted an ATM cell. When at least two loopback switch requests are in existence in the ring and request are directed to different transmission lines, it is discriminated that a fault takes place in a node between the transmission lines. When a node represented by destination node information provided on a received cell matches a faulty node, squelch processing (571, 572) is applied to the cell. The squelch processing is conducted in such a way that the cell addressed to the faulty node is replaced with a fault notice cell or the cell addressed to the faulty node is aborted.
