A wand includes a self-winding or self-furling mechanism into which a cord attached to the wand is retracted so that the wand travels along the cord if this is held fast. The wand may also be collapsible. Typically, the wand comprises a tubular member 1 and a resilient member (20, Figure 6) mounted within the tubular member, one end of the resilient member (20) being connected to a cord 8 which passes out through an aperture 16 and a side wall of the tubular member and the other end of the resilient member (20) being connected to the tubular member 1 whereby when the cord 8 is extracted from the tubular member 1 by the aperture 16, the resilient member (20) is resiliently deformed such that the cord 8 is under tension and the cord 8 and tubular member 1 are urged there together. The resilient member (20) is suitably housed within and attached to spool member 19. One of the tubular member and the spool member 19 includes telescopically mounted extension members (3,4,5, Figures 1 and 3), and slidably mounted connecting members (11). One end of the wand may be weighted, suitably by the use of a weighted extension member, so that the wand will hang vertically in use. |
