PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To immediately distinguish and inform a malfunction occurring either in a transmitter or receiver constituting an acoustic gas temperature measuring apparatus. SOLUTION: This is an acoustic gas temperature measuring apparatus which has a sound wave transmitter 1 and a sound wave receiver 2 provided in such a way as to interpose a gas passage between, finds time for a temperature measuring sound wave from the sound wave transmitter 1 to propagate through the gas passage and measures the temperature of the gas on a sound wave propagating path from the propagation time. And from the input waveform 102 of the sound wave receiver 2, the intensity 304 of a measured sound wave signal and the intensity 301 of noise not containing a measuring sound wave are detected, and the measured sound wave signal intensity 304 and the above- mentioned noise intensity 301 are compared with respective specified reference values 305, 302 respectively, and malfunctioning of the sound wave transmitter 1 and/or sound wave receiver 2 is judged 307, 303.
