One or more colors of a digitally scanned image is selected to be kept and converted into a luminance-chrominance coordinate system (34). Each image pixel is then similarly converted. If the space between the pixel coordinates and those of the selected image (38) are less than a threshold value it is retained and converted to black (44). If greater, then it is converted to white and discarded (42). The converted black and white pixel image can then be stored and further processed if required. An Independent claim is made for a device for scanning and converting an image using the process described.
