PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible memory system. SOLUTION: Computer instructions and picture data are stored in the same semiconductor memory if necessary. In order to efficiently use a memory subsystem where both calculation instructions and picture data are stored, a virtual memory control process is used which efficiently pages picture data and computer instructions from a main memory to a large-capacity storage device like a hard disk drive. Therefore, if more space is required to store the computer instructions or to store picture data, the virtual space memory system dynamically assigns memory volumes to picture data and computer instructions, and various kinds of data are paged between the semiconductor memory of the digital copying machine and the large-capacity storage device. |
