PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately decide the placing direction of a rectangular document placed on an original platen by a small number of optical scanning track generators and document edge detectors. SOLUTION: An optical scanning track is set in an area where only a long side of the vertically or horizontally placed rectangular document placed on the original platen exists (a scanning track set area 51). A document size detection part 20 is provided with a library 23 as the reference of the rectangular document and refers to the library 23 in accordance with a position detected in the scanning track set area to discriminate the size and the placing direction of the placed document.
