<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an encoder sensor from getting stained with mist. <P>SOLUTION: Since an optical linear encoder requires a pair of a sensor and a film, when a carriage of a printer is used, the carriage requires holes to pass the film through and makes it difficult to make the carriage a perfectly enclosed system that prevents it from getting stained with a printing mist. Consequently the carriage is given an opening with a filter far greater than the film holes, a printing mist gradually entering the film holes is cleared away by a large quantity of air passing through the filter.
